Step by step
Prepare the surface
Lightly sand the surface with 400–600 grit paper to soften the layer lines. Stroke, don't press. Brush or wipe the dust away.
Prime
Apply a thin coat of primer and let it dry fully. Primer helps the colour grip and stops it flaking.
Paint your colours
Build up acrylic paint in thin layers. Don't glob it on: thin coat, dry, repeat. Use a fine brush for small details.
Finish
Once the paint is fully dry, protect it with a clear coat — matte, semi-gloss or gloss, whichever you like.
Recommended paints and tools
- Acrylic paint (base colours) — For the main colour areas.
- Acrylic paint (small details) — For eyes, lips, buttons and other details.
- Primer — Improves adhesion.
- Clear coat — Protects and sets the sheen.
- Brushes and a palette — A flat brush and a fine brush are handy.
Tips for a clean result
- Use a little paint at a time and build thin layers.
- Use a fine brush for details. Paint the face last — it's the easiest to get right that way.
- Test any new paint somewhere hidden first, such as under the base.
- Watercolours don't stick well to the surface, so we don't recommend them.
Stay safe
Paint in a well-ventilated space and use protective gear (gloves, a mask). Use spray paint outdoors or with good airflow, away from flames. Always read the label on any paint or solvent.
